Howard University Hospital's Women's Imaging Center offers a wide range of comprehensive and specialized, diagnostic services for women in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area. Select services range in scope from recommended screenings and biopsies to prenatal imaging. Our experts are dedicated to providing excellent patient care in a comfortable, state-of-the art environment with a goal to greatly enhance patient health outcomes.
Breast Imaging (3D Mammography & Ultrasound)
Our Women's Imaging Center provides mammography and other breast imaging (breast ultrasound and breast MRI), pelvic imaging, and bone densitometry. The technology and procedures include both screenings and diagnostic digital mammography, outpatient ultrasounds of all types (not just breast) and bone density screenings. We also perform invasive diagnostic procedures such as Breast Ultrasound Guided Biopsy, Cyst Aspirations, Stereotactic Biopsies and MRI Guided Breast Biopsies.
Breast MRI
An MRI of the breast offers valuable information about many breast conditions that cannot be obtained by other imaging modalities, such as mammography or ultrasound. This procedure uses a powerful magnetic field, radio frequency pulses and a computer to produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone and virtually all other internal body structures. Breast MRI is not a replacement for mammography or ultrasound imaging but rather a supplemental tool. Uses also include, screening women at high-risk for breast cancer to determine the extent of cancer after a new diagnosis of breast cancer; and further evaluation of hard-to-assess abnormalities that are discovered on mammography.

Breast Biopsy
The specialists at Howard University Women's Imaging Center provide three types of breast biopsies. The most common is Ultrasound Guided Breast Biopsy. Next is Stereotactic Breast Biopsy, and finally Magnetic Resonance (MR-guided breast biopsy).
Hysterosalpingogram & Hysterosonogram
Hysterosalpingography is an examination of a woman's uterus and fallopian tubes that uses a special form of X-ray called fluoroscopy and a contrast material. Hysterosonography is an ultrasound of the uterus, Ultrasound is that produces pictures of the inside of the body using sound waves.
Bone Densitometry (DEXA)
Bone Densitometry also called DXA is an enhanced form of X-ray technology that is used to measure bone loss. DXA is an established standard for measuring bone mineral density (BMD). DXA is most often used to diagnose osteoporosis, a condition that often affects women after menopause but may also be found in men. The procedure can also assess an individual's risk for developing fractures due to age, lifestyle and history.
